A Red, Red Rose for Valentines Day

red rose

My luv is like a red, red rose

     That’s newly sprung in June:

My luv is like the melody

     That’s sweetly played in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,

     So deep in love am I:

And I will luv thee still, my dear,

     Til a’ the seas gang dry.

Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear,

     And the rocks melt wi’ the sun:

And I will luv thee still, my dear,

     While the sands o’ life shall run.

And fare thee weel, my only love,

     And fare thee weel a while!

And I will come again, my luv,

     Thou’ it were ten thousand mile.

              Robert Burns, 1794

  1. INTERESTING choice for your Valentine’s poem, Mary – – – I’ll be singing composer Amy Beach’s version of this Robert Burns classic tomorrow (Saturday) evening at…. where else?…. the Merchant’s House Museum as part of the Bond Street Euterpean Singing Society’s “Love in the Parlors: A Valentine in Song,” their annual February concert at the MHM.

    Ms Beach was one of the few acknowledged and successful female composers of the 19th (or pretty much ANY) Century prior to post WWII. Her version of the poem is one of my favorite performance pieces and I’m asked to sing it frequently.

    Happy/sad to report that the concert tomorrow is completely and totally SOLD OUT, so anyone interested and not already holding a ticket will need to come another time.

    Happy Valentine’s Day, Ms Beach… Anthony Bellov

  2. Dear Mary…..several days late, but I must reply :

    A single flow’r he sent me since we met.
    All tenderly his messenger he chose;
    Deep hearted, pure, with scented dew still wet—
    One perfect rose.

    I knew the language of the floweret;
    “My fragile leaves,” it said, “his heart enclose.”
    Love long has taken for his amulet
    One perfect rose.

    Why is it no one ever sent me yet
    One perfect limousine, do you suppose?
    Ah no, it’s always just my luck to get
    One perfect rose.
